As part of our work with the local community, we have partnered with a charitable trust in Kaitaia called GoodLife Projects Charitable Trust. This organisation provides vocational opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities. On their Pukepoto Road site, they have a large garden area where 17 project members with disabilities have their own gardens to learn gardening skills and grow their veggies.
The green waste we collect at our resource recovery centre is then delivered to them. From there, it is kept in windrows, cleaned of anything inorganic, reduced to mulch and used for their garden site development. The produce grown in the garden is then taken home by the project members to enjoy their harvest with family or sell it for their profit. As a result of this partnership, many garden improvements can be made, and three people with disabilities can be casually employed to help on the site.
